Sculpture & Scent By Ingrid Nelson

While observing African Masks, which I later found out came from various ethnic groups of present day Ivory Coast, an idea came into my mind. What if I created candles sculptures inspired by these masks. Their beauty deserved to be shared in a way that could serve as an experience. Despite not having sculpted before I decided to learn. This has led me down a 5 years journey of discovering ceramic sculpture, gaining knowledge of scent and the creative process of sculpture.

I fell in love with sculpting the figure particularly that of black women. Like my ancestors who sculpted these beautiful mask, I wanted to showcase the beauty of blackness showcasing key identifying features that black women carry. From the voluptuous lips to the wide noses, these features are what makes us beautiful.
